We Need YOU to Help Keep Payday Lending OUT of Maryland

Thursday, March 16, 2017

Thank you! Your calls and emails are paying off – the House of Delegates passed our anti-payday bill unanimously! At the same time, Senate Finance committee members have been receiving messages and calls asking for them to take action and keep payday lenders out of Maryland.

Our legislation, HB 1270/SB 527 affirms Maryland’s rate cap of 33% and says that any consumer loan including fees and charges, cannot exceed 33% APR. That rate cap protects Maryland families from high-cost, predatory loans and ensures that any loans they take out are affordable.

However, we need the Chair of the Senate Finance committee, Senator Middleton, to bring the bill to a vote and pass it without any amendments. To call the bill for a vote, he needs to hear from you – he needs to know that YOU don’t want these loans in Maryland.

Can you take one minute today to email and/or call Senator Middleton asking him to be the hero Maryland needs and pass SB 527 without amendments?

Anyone in Maryland can take action – even if you've already written to your own legislator about HB 1270/SB 527.

Read more about payday lending in our factsheet on HB 1270/SB 527.

Read our one-pager on the legislation.

Thank you for your support.

In Solidarity,
Marceline White

P.S. Out of state payday lenders have hired some of Annapolis’ highest paid lobbyists to beat back our grassroots efforts to stop predatory lending. Can you make a donation to support our work fighting for economic inclusion on behalf of working families throughout the state?

P.P.S. After you make your call or send your email, can you share this alert with your friends and colleagues? Share by sending them this link: https://goo.gl/oIxZIX
